Born in Los Angeles into a modest family with clear spiritual ethics, Benito “Benny” Bernal was raised with solid principles, where integrity, fairness, hard work and justice were the foundation of dailybehavior. Whether working alongside his parentsand siblings picking vegetables as a child on his school breaks, coaching youth to keep them out of gangs or in his substantial involvement in his Church, he consistently displayed these strong moral standards.  Throughout his life he has committed to these values in both his word and his conduct.

Benito was a long serving active member and representative of the Service Employees International Union where he assisted members with labor-management issues and contract negotiations.  He also shared leadership of a group of members who were directly responsible for exposing and ending exploitation of the membership by several local officials.  In the first open and honest election after the local’s reorganization, he was elected as the SEIU Vice-President where he served with excellence and distinction.  Benito has clearly demonstrated through his selfless service in his spiritual, community and work activities his dedication to helping others.

Now that his children are adults he has redoubled his efforts to the duty we all share of addressing significant community issues.  After years of persuasion from local and religious leaders, with the ability to devote additional time in our community and recognizing the impact of legislative policies on local conditions he accepted the recommendation to carry the community’s issues and message to Washington D.C. and was the people’s choice for the 2018 General Election as the 29th Congressional District Candidate.
